Potty Training and Elimination Communication Simplified

Most parents struggle with potty training and they often fear this particular period of parenthood, but for no real reason. Teaching your child to use the toilet after he has become accustomed to using a diaper may seem like a daunting task.  However, many parents are amazed how simple potty training and Elimination Communication really is, and it can be learned by all parents and caregivers everywhere. There is no need to shy away from potty training as it just a natural phase in childhood and by applying modern methods and techniques like elimination communication, or EC as it is also known, potty training really is far less stressful and a lot more effective than traditional methods.

Elimination Communication Simplified

EC’ing has been used for as long as there have been babies.  It is basically recognising the signs that your child needs to answer the call of nature, or to put it another way, “use the potty”.

Every child has his own unique way of informing an adult that he is about to urinate or have a bowel movement.  It’s up to the parents to pick up on these signs.  Some things to look for include passing wind, grunting, squirming, or a serious look on your child’s face.  Your child may do some or all of these things, or he may give cues that are unique to him.

Once you’ve figured out the signs, you can start taking the child to the potty when you see them.  Parents often develop signs, either verbal or visual, that let the child know that they are in a place where it is acceptable to eliminate.  If he does, some praise will reinforce the behaviour and make him more likely to continue with it.

To Use a Diaper or Not

One reason some parents choose the EC method is because it can reduce the need for diapers.  Although, in the early stages, you will probably need some backup by having a clean diaper in your bag, the possibility of not having to buy diapers is very appealing.  Some parents find that using cloth diapers enhances their children’s success with elimination communication due to the fact that they can feel the results of elimination.

Some parents choose not to use diapers at all when practicing EC potty training.  Many of these parents claim that their children rarely have a bowel movement in their underwear. Unfortunately, it can be necessary to use a diaper when away from home for an extended period of time.

EC Debate

Some experts feel that potty training and elimination communication is inappropriate due to the fact that it is started at such a young age.  They claim that because children under two years old do not have fully developed muscles, they cannot control their urination and bowel movements.  There are also psychologists who argue that early toilet training can cause problems later in life.

EC supporters claim that it is not damaging to the child because he is not pressured into going to the toilet on his own.  If done correctly, EC puts the caregiver in charge of getting the child to the toilet when he needs to go.  The child will realize what is going on and start going to the bathroom on his own when the time comes.

Elimination communication sounds unusual to some parents, but it is an easy concept to implement.  It has the potential to make potty training easier and less stressful, and it could save you a lot of money in the long run.  Once you have learned to understand the signs that indicate your child needs to use the toilet, the hardest part is over.

Your baby stays clean, dry and happy. He doesn’t have to sit in urine and he doesn’t have to have his own waste smeared all over him and he will be free from any form of sore or rash, which we know can be very painful. You just wipe your baby with toilet paper, give a quick once over with a wipe, or do a quick rinse using clean, warm water.

Teenagers, Drugs and Boredom

Teenagers, Drugs and Boredom by Vivienne Myatt

Parents may not have the responsibility to keep their teenagers from getting bored, but boredom can lead to all sorts of things. Drug addiction and teenagers and parents and responsibility, these things are intertwined, whether we like it or not.

When we see a group of teenagers hanging around, on street corners or in the local park, not all of them are going to be taking drugs, drinking and making a nuisance of themselves, but they are, more than likely, going to be bored.

After all when we have nothing to do and some one suggests something, we don’t always make the right decision. We can’t hope that what our teens have been taught in school, will keep them from doing drugs or drinking. We, as parents have to take responsibility.

When teenagers develop an addiction, it is not always just their fault. There can be lots of different reasons why some one gets addicted or just into taking something they should not. The thing to remember is not to go mad, but try to understand how they got to this stage. Help them, don’t punish them.

The responsibility for taking drugs, whether it be alcohol, cannabis, tobacco or even stronger substances, is not always just down to the individual. Peer pressure is usually a resounding factor, when it comes to someone trying a new thing, no matter what it is. We cannot always choose who our kids have as friends, but we can influence their choices, by giving them a good upbringing and an understanding of right and wrong.

Finding something that your teenager enjoys doing, is a good start to keeping them off of the streets and out of bad company. Finding things for bored teenagers to do, can be difficult, especially when they have lost interest in something they used to enjoy. Keeping a teen interested in a pastime, is not as easy as it sounds either, but doing things to help them keep interested, is a must for any parent.

Knowing when some one has an addiction is not an easy thing; people hide addiction very well and teenagers are masters at keeping from you things that they don’t want you to find out. So drug addiction and teenagers and parents and responsibility go hand in hand, because we are the ones who need to teach them about responsibility, addiction and everything else in life. Well most of it.

Spotting the signs of addiction is not always an easy thing to do, especially with teenagers. Addicts find all sorts of ways to hide what they are doing. One of the key things we should all do as parents, is to be able to talk frankly and openly with our teenage children, not talk down to them and try to keep up with their interests. Hopefully our teens will keep away from drugs and other vices, but as I’ve said before, we as parents have to take responsibility for the things our kids do and help them through any difficulties they have in life.

Tips to Stop Bedwetting

May 6, 2008 · Posted in Bed Wetting · Comment

Bedwetting is a fairly common problem in children under 7 years old.  It can be very frustrating for the parents, and embarrassing for the child. It is important to remember that bedwetting is not normally a medical problem, and it is usually not associated with psychological or physical problems. In the majority of cases, children simply sleep too deeply and do not feel the urge to go to the bathroom when they need to, and as a result they wet the bed.

Bedwetting will almost always go away on its own eventually.  But there are some things you can do to help your child stop sooner. Here are some treatment ideas and general tips:

* Don’t give your child fluids for two hours before bedtime. Let him have plenty of fluids up until that point, however, to prevent dehydration and constipation. While this may not completely stop bedwetting, it may reduce its frequency.

*Make sure your child goes to the bathroom right before bed, and that he completely empties his bladder. Tell him to try again once his bladder feels empty, just to be sure. This is called double voiding. If more urine comes out, have him try one more time.

* Some children’s bladders are simply too small to hold their urine through the night. Bladder stretching exercises may help in these cases. These simply require your child to hold his urine a bit longer than usual.  If he generally goes to the bathroom at certain times during the day, have him wait 15 minutes or so before going, then increase the time slightly each week or so.  This will take several weeks, and possibly months, so be patient.

* Take your child to the doctor. There are some underlying problems that can cause or contribute to bedwetting. The doctor can check for these and treat the problems he finds.  As a result, the bedwetting may go away on its own.

* Use a bedwetting alarm. These have moisture sensing pads that go in the child’s underwear at night, sensing moisture when it first starts to dribble out. The alarm then wakes the child with sound or vibration so that he can go to the bathroom. After using an alarm for a while, children often become conditioned to wake up when their bladders are full, eliminating the problem.

* Consider medication as a last resort. There are medicines that can help prevent bedwetting by slowing urine production or relaxing the bladder. They do, however, have potential side effects. Consider using them if the other methods fail, or perhaps keep some on hand to give your child for sleepovers or trips.

* Never scold your child for bedwetting.  It’s not his fault, and scolding will only make him feel hurt and ashamed.

Anti aging is a term that we all know and some even dread, but it’s a term that’s been around for a long time and it’s going to be around for a lot longer.

Naturally, people are looking for a way to prolong their life.  They want to look younger for longer, if not for ever. It’s natural to want to keep your good looks for as long as possible.  You may have wrinkles.  You may have drying skin.  The goal with anti aging is to improve your current condition to improve the way that you look and feel.

There are plenty of anti aging solutions available today that cater for the individual needs of everyone. What you choose is really dependant on what goals you set yourself, as well as your budget and desires.  Some choices are can be drastic while some are mild.

The bottom line to remember is that if you are going to find relief from your conditions, you do have to put in some extra work to make it actually happen.  It is challenging but it is something well worth investing in.

There are a number of choices that you have.  Here are some things to think about in anti aging solutions.

*    Use products that are over the counter or prescribed to enhance your looks.
*    Cosmetic surgery is another option but one that is much more costly, with the inconvenience of possibly having to take things easy for some time after the surgery.
*    Natural solutions and natural remedies are also available. These can help in a simple and natural way.
*   Maintaining a healthy and well balanced diet is also a requirement for any type of anti aging technique to be effective.

Taking the time to explore your options for improving your looks and your health is a great thing.  Do take the time to consider several options as not all of the options you have are going to work for everyone.  Yet, with a bit of research and skill, you can find the right anti aging solution for your needs.
